- Avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen for one week before your appointment to minimize bruising.
- Stay hydrated in the week before your appointment to keep your skin hydrated.
- Don’t consume alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment, as they can increase bleeding and bruising.
- Smoking can negatively affect your injectable results; avoid smoking, vaping, and all nicotine products for at least 48 hours before your appointment.
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners for at least two weeks before treatment.
- Avoid treatments like waxing, chemical peels, and injectables for at least two weeks.
- Use gentle skincare products and avoid those containing retinol, vitamin A, or other acids.
- Use a gentle cleanser the morning before your appointment, and don’t wear makeup.
What to Expect During Your IPL Treatment in Charlotte, NC
IPL treatments are a simple, quick in-office procedure that is typically well-tolerated. Once you arrive at the office, you will be taken to a treatment room to meet with your provider to review your treatment details. Before beginning your IPL treatment, your Charlotte dermatologist will cleanse the area and treat your skin with a topical anesthetic to minimize your discomfort.
Once you are ready, your eyes will be covered with dark glasses for protection. A thin gel will be applied to the skin. Then, your provider will guide the IPL handpiece across your skin. Some patients may experience a slight stinging sensation.

What to Expect After Your IPL Treatment

As sweat may irritate the skin, avoid strenuous exercise or other activities that can cause sweating for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks and protect your skin with sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and protective clothing when exposure is unavoidable.

How Long Do IPL Results Last?
Patients typically see subtle skin improvements one to two weeks after their first IPL treatment. They will see continued enhancements for three to six months as collagen production increases. Our experts usually recommend three to five sessions to achieve the desired results. Final results are typically visible four to six weeks after the final session.
