What Are Neuromodulators, and How Do They Work?
Neuromuscular relaxers like Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Letybo are anti-aging injectable treatments that use a purified form of the botulinum toxin type A to refresh and restore a youthful appearance.
These relaxers work by blocking the nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract, meaning the muscles are temporarily relaxed. As we create facial expressions, creases and wrinkles form in the skin, which disappear at rest. Over time and with age, however, the skin loses elasticity (bounce back), and creases and wrinkles from this dynamic movement remain visible even without movement.
When injected into carefully planned locations, Botox relaxes the muscles that are responsible for deep lines and wrinkles, diminishing their appearance. A cosmetically significant effect of botox along the brow and around the eyes is raising the brown and giving a more youthful, open eye appearance and diminishing loose skin on the upper eyelid. There are many other positive effects of botox: lifting lower face and jowls, reshaping lower face, reducing gummy smile, soften lip lines, improve skin texture, and even improve mood!
This simple, quick in-office procedure gives patients renewed confidence and a refreshed appearance with no downtime.
What Do Neuromodulators Treat?
Dr. Rostan and the team at Charlotte Skin & Laser use Botox and other neuromuscular relaxers to enhance the skin’s appearance, reduce lines, and help you look more awake and youthful.
Here are some of the ways we can use relaxers for your benefit:
- Brow lifting – opening the eyes and reducing upper eyelid folds
- Reduce wrinkles like the “11” lines, crow’s feet, and bunny lines
- Soften vertical lip lines and enhance lip appearance (lip flip)
- Reshape the lower face
- Smooth chin dimples and lengthen chin and jawline
- Improve a downturned lower lip
- Tighten the neck
- Reduce sweating, flushing, redness, and even persistent itching
One of the primary benefits of Botox is that it is both very safe and very predictable. We are constantly refining our technique, and pay careful attention to your facial contours and movement to ensure we enhance your natural beauty and achieve the best results possible. You will never look expressionless, overdone, or unlike yourself.
How Do Neuromodulators Fit Into Your Anti-Aging Plan?
Neuromodulators are powerful anti-aging tools that can be integrated into a skincare regimen at any time and are used for both prevention and rejuvenation. Ideally, patients should start Botox before they feel they need it to ensure smooth skin and a youthful look for as long as possible.
Neuromodulators for Prevention
Neuromodulators are powerful anti-aging tools that can be integrated into a skincare regimen at any time and are used for both prevention and rejuvenation. Ideally, patients should start Botox before they feel they need it to ensure smooth skin and a youthful look for as long as possible.
Neuromodulators for Anti-Aging Treatment
As people get older, the primary goal of neuromodulator treatments is to lift the brow, smooth wrinkles around the eyes, lengthen the jaw to enhance chin appearance, decrease the downturn of the lower lip, and relax neck banding.
Am I a Candidate for Botox?
Most people who want to prevent or treat the most obvious signs of aging are candidates for Botox. The art is using the relaxers in the best and most efficient way to achieve optimal results. At each treatment session, you will be asked about past experiences with relaxer and evaluated for what would be ideal for the current treatment.

What Neuromodulators Do We Offer?
At Charlotte Skin & Laser, we proudly offer five advanced neuromodulators—Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Letybo. This variety allows our providers to tailor treatments with precision, ensuring safe and effective results that align with each patients goal.
Botox
Since 2002, Botox has been FDA-approved to improve the appearance of glabellar lines and forehead wrinkles. It contains the Botulinum toxin type A and additional proteins.
- Patients can see results in up to a week and full results within two weeks
- Results last between 3 to 4 months depending on how your body metabolizes the product
Dysport
Dysport, FDA-approved in 2009 to treat frown lines, is slightly more diluted than Botox but contains the same Botulinum toxin type A.
- Results are visible within 2 to 3 days and last up to 4 months
- Formulation contains cow’s milk protein and lactose, making it unsuitable for people with dairy allergies
Jeuveau
Jeuveau was approved as a neuromodulator in 2019 for cosmetic treatment of lines and wrinkles. With the same active ingredient, the added proteins are smaller and may absorb more easily, meaning patients will see results sooner.
- Visible results within a few days and last 3 to 4 months
Xeomin
In 2010, Xeomin was FDA-approved to treat frown lines. Unlike other neuromodulators, it does not contain any additives and is simply a purified form of Botulinum toxin type A.
- Results are visible within 3 to 5 days and last around 3 to 4 months
- Because Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, some patients find these injections more comfortable because they are slightly warmer than the other neuromodulators
Letybo
- Results are visible within 2 to 3 days and last around 3 to 4 months
- Letybo may be ideal for patients who have not achieved their optimal results from Botox or other neuromodulators.

Preparing for Your Botox Appointment
Your provider will ensure you know how to prepare for your upcoming Botox appointment prior to scheduling, but here are general ways to get ready:
- Pause certain medications: Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen for one week prior to your appointment to minimize bruising
- Hydrate well: Stay hydrated for the week before your appointment to keep your skin hydrated

- Keep skin clean:Use a gentle cleanser the morning before your appointment, and don’t wear makeup
What to Expect During Your Botox Treatment in Charlotte, NC
Botox is a simple, quick in-office procedure. Once you arrive at the office, you will be taken to a treatment room where you will meet with your provider to review your treatment plan details. Before the Botox is injected into your muscles, your Charlotte dermatologist will cleanse the area and mark your face to guide the treatment.
Once you are ready, your Botox provider will use a very fine needle to inject the product into the muscles. This process is generally painless, often doesn’t leave any bruises, and only takes a few minutes to complete. You can expect your Botox appointment to last 15 to 30 minutes.
What to Expect After Botox Treatment
Immediately following your injections, we can provide you with an ice pack reduce bruising and swelling. There are a few simple guidelines we advise following your injection session:
- Some patients may experience a temporary slight headache, mild bruising, swelling, or redness, but this will subside on its own within 1 to 2 days
- Do not massage the treatment area for 6-8 hours
- Avoid strenuous activity, excessive heat, and direct sun exposure for 24 hours after your appointment
You will begin to notice your results after a few days, and you can expect your full results to be visible within two weeks, depending on the type of neuromuscular relaxer you and Dr. Rostan chose during your consultation.
If you have any questions about your recovery after Botox or your post-treatment care instructions, please call the office at (704) 333-9113. We are committed to providing every patient with a superior experience.
