Fall is prime laser season at Charlotte Skin & Laser. Cooler weather and lower sun exposure mean smoother healing, with enough time to get your glow back before the holidays. Laser treatments deliver most of their results through your body’s own healing response, and what you do at home in the days and weeks after treatment determines how much redness fades, how fast you heal, and how long your results last. That’s why we’re bringing back one of our most insightful Queen City Skin episodes: Dr. Elizabeth Rostan, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Charlotte Skin & Laser, and Alexxa Forte, cosmetic consultant at Charlotte Skin & Laser, walk through exactly what to do, and use, before, during, and after your next laser treatment

Does Skincare Really Matter After a Laser Treatment?
Yes. Skincare and in-office procedures aren’t separate efforts, they work together. Dr. Rostan often shares a rule of thumb a colleague once gave her: procedures do a lot of the visible work, but daily skincare is what carries results the rest of the way. “They don’t live alone,” she says. “The lasers, the energy-based devices, the renewal processes – they help your skin look great. But what you do every day at home is critical for your success.”
Alexxa puts it more bluntly: “I like to think of it as going to the gym without eating the right diet. You want to lose the weight, you work out, but you just eat fries all the time.” Skip the aftercare, and you’re leaving results on the table.
What Should You Do Immediately After a Laser Treatment?
Right after treatment, calm the heat first. In-office, the team uses ice packs, cool air, and a cool Avène spring water mist (all of which you can continue at home). Dr. Rostan also recommends a newer peptide-based product from Revision that does something most post-laser products can’t: “The peptide has the ability to take away the immediate heat and sting feeling of the laser. This one calms the fire down.” The EltaMD sunscreen with a green tint is the other immediate essential – color-correcting post-laser redness on contact.
How Can You Support Faster, More Comfortable Healing?
Most of the “sandpapery” feeling patients describe in the days after treatment comes from skin that hasn’t fully lifted off yet – and the right products speed that along. Alastin’s Regenerating Skin Nectar is a favorite, and notably, the team recommends starting it before treatment too. “It actually helps prepare the skin for the laser,” says Alexxa. Dr. Rostan describes it this way: “It’s like sweeping the floors before your new furniture arrives, right? You gotta clear out the old to welcome the new.”
Once healing is underway, EltaMD Moisture Seal, “Elta Grease,” as Dr. Rostan calls it, helps lift that texture without feeling sticky. Daily vitamin C matters here too, since it’s essential for the collagen production that supports healing.
When Can You Restart Retinol After a Laser Treatment?
For a non-ablative laser, most patients with resilient skin can restart retinol within three to four days – sooner with a gentler formula. If healing hits a setback, that timeline shifts back. The exact answer depends on your skin and your specific treatment, which is worth confirming at your consultation.
What Products Help Laser Results Last Longer?
Beyond the initial healing window, a few products are built to extend what the laser started. SkinCeuticals Advanced RGN-6 is one Dr. Rostan uses personally: “They’ve tried to look at what the skin does, what it produces after a laser. And how can we put that in a bottle?” It doesn’t replace treatment, but it can stretch results between sessions. For oilier or acne-prone skin worried about breakouts from “moisturizing stuff,” SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF is a well-tolerated exception, a vitamin C formulated to also help reduce oil.
What Should You Bring to Your Laser Consultation?
Your current skincare bag. “Let’s take a look at what you have and how we can add to it so that you are getting optimal results after your laser journey,” says Alexxa. Dr. Rostan does the same in-office, sorting what to pause during healing, what to keep, and where the real gaps are. “If you love this product, please keep using it. But don’t use it at the expense of using one of these products that’s going to help your skin heal.”
